De Anza College Student Films to Be Featured at Cinequest 2005

Two student films produced in De Anza College’s Film/Television Program have been selected for Cinequest Film Festival 2005, which has been ranked as one of the world’s top 10 film festivals by the Ultimate Film Festival Survival Guide. Adriel Amirol’s and Paul Kresge’s futuristic “Trans” and Hayato Ando’s comic “Ramen Life” will unspool on the big screen during the festival’s March 2 to 13 run.

The De Anza student shorts will compete among the 12 films in Cinequest’s Shorts Program 7: Student Shorts. The program is slated for March 3 at 8 p.m. and March 5 at 9 a.m. at the Camera 12 Cinemas in downtown San Jose. The lineup represents emerging film talent from campuses across the nation, including those enrolled in such prestigious graduate film programs as the University of Southern California, Columbia University and The American Film Institute. De Anza is the only community college represented.

“Here at De Anza students can count on a supportive environment to create their films. With instructors who care about students’ work and their willingness to help them reach their potential, the end result is award-winning films,” said Zaki Lisha, coordinator of the Film/TV Department. “Year after year, we are very proud of our students’ achievements at Cinequest.”

Films of former De Anza students Scott Smith, Ross Guidici, Steve Sprinkles and Immanuel Martin will also be shown at Cinequest 2005 on the following dates and times:

  • Smith (“Carny Tales,” 2002 Sundance Audience Choice Award) wrote and directed “Charlie the Ox,” a comedy crime caper starring Cory McAbee (frontman of the band “The Billy Nayer Show”) and Jon Polito (“Miller’s Crossing,” “The Big Lebowski”). Shot in HD-Cam, the feature makes its world premiere on March 5 at 5:15 p.m. at the San Jose Repertory Theatre in downtown San Jose. “Charlie the Ox” screens again on March 6 at 4 p.m. at the Camera 12.
  • Guidici (“The Legend of Dolemite Bigger and Badder” at Cinequest 2003) directed the 19-minute “Days Like These,” which plays before the feature “The Dry Spell” on March 4 at 7 p.m., March 6 at 9 p.m., and March 9 at 5:15 p.m.—all at the San Jose State University Theater.
  • Sprinkles directed the 10-minute comedy “Chick Magnet,” which is slated to play before “The Search for the Captain” on March 5 at 3:15 p.m. at the San Jose Repertory and on March 7 at 9:30 p.m. at the Camera 12.
  • Martin’s “Diez” plays with Shorts Program 5: Show and Tell on March 3 at 5:30 p.m. and March 6 at 7:15 p.m.—both at Camera 12.

In addition, Film/TV Department screenwriting instructors Ed Azlant and John W. Kim will participate in the Movie Maker Forum 1: Day of the Writer on March 11. Their panel titled “Writing the Great Screenplay” begins at 1:15 p.m. at San Jose State University Theater.

Focusing on maverick films, filmmakers and the technology that empowers creativity, the Cinequest 15 edition will pay tribute to actors Sir Ben Kingsley (“Gandhi,” “Schindler’s List,” “Sexy Beast,” “House of Sand and Fog”) and Jon Polito (“Miller’s Crossing,” “The Big Lebowski”).
